Route and travel time

Transfer plan: check against the exact accommodation
LegDistance or geographic referenceTime to allow
Nairobi → MaraFlight to the correct camp airstrip, or road route quoted separatelyUse the booked schedule plus airport and camp transfers
Mara → DianiConfirmed routing and coastal arrival airport requiredKeep a transport day; no assumed direct service
Diani → NairobiUkunda or Mombasa according to the actual ticketUse current flight and ground-transfer times

Road-time ranges are editorial planning allowances including ordinary breaks, not measured current traffic. Where an official distance is available it is identified; other distances need confirmation for the chosen gate and lodge. Safari driving is additional.

Book these decisions first

The room allowance is an arithmetic assumption for two adults, not a verified honeymoon or luxury market rate. The transport subtotal is intentionally zero because this version needs separately quoted flights and camp transfers; zero means excluded, not free.

Specify the exact room, private versus shared drives, meal basis and any conservancy charge. Three reserve periods at the January-June USD 100 rate would be USD 300 rather than the USD 600 example.

Day 1: Nairobi arrival

Arrange a smooth transfer and a quiet room. Keep the evening free rather than scheduling a special dinner that depends on the international flight arriving exactly on time.

Day 2: Nairobi at a comfortable pace

Choose one shared interest and leave space to rest. Review the domestic baggage limit and any storage arrangement for items that will not go on the safari flight.

Day 3: Transfer to the Mara

Use the confirmed Wilson flight and camp airstrip transfer, or a separately planned road alternative. Settle into the room and understand the private or shared drive arrangements before the first outing.

Day 4: A full Mara day

Let the guide adapt to your interests and conditions. If privacy matters, confirm the vehicle arrangement rather than assuming a honeymoon label buys exclusive drives.

Day 5: A flexible safari day

A balloon flight or another special experience is optional, separately priced and weather-dependent. Keep an ordinary excellent safari day as the fallback, without placing pressure on wildlife or the operator to deliver a staged moment.

Day 6: Travel to the coast

Use an actually confirmed Mara-to-coast routing, direct or connecting as available. Reserve the day for transport and a relaxed arrival at the selected Diani property. Do not assume daily direct service from every airstrip.

Day 7: Unscheduled beach time

Learn the frontage, tide pattern and meal options. Leave the day open and decide which, if any, activities would improve the stay rather than fill it.

Day 8: One optional sea outing

Book with a competent provider and clear weather and cancellation terms. A private boat arrangement should state route, duration, crew, equipment and what “private” actually covers.

Day 9: Another coast day

Keep a full day with no move of accommodation. Use it for rest, a local interest or a rescheduled activity. A special meal should be arranged with its actual price and inclusions, not assumed from the occasion.

Day 10: Return to Nairobi

Fly from the confirmed coastal airport and retrieve any stored luggage with enough time. Keep the final overnight convenient for the international departure.

Day 11: Departure

Use a prearranged airport transfer and avoid a last distant excursion. Keep the final day calm enough that the buffer remains useful.

A transparent budget you can adapt

The calculation below is an illustrative planning scenario for two adults sharing a room and a private road vehicle. Room, food and vehicle amounts are explicit assumptions chosen to make the arithmetic visible, not current supplier prices or a quote. Replace them with dated offers before booking.

Only the park and permit figures identified as published tariffs are sourced prices. Count paid access periods from the actual entry and exit times; the sample below does not establish how many tickets your operator will charge. Do not pay for a fee twice if it is already included in a package.

How to adapt the route

If privacy is the priority, compare a named conservancy stay with its actual access rules and charges. If migration location matters more, choose the relevant reserve area and accept the possibility of busier sightings.

Watamu or Lamu can replace Diani when the setting and confirmed connections fit. Change the transfer plan accordingly and preserve several nights in one coast base.

Questions & answers

Is this a bookable package?

No. It is an editorial route with explicit budget assumptions. Obtain dated transport, accommodation and activity confirmations from providers.

Are the road times guaranteed?

No. The exact gate, lodge, traffic, weather and stops determine the journey. Keep daylight and a buffer before fixed departures.

Does the subtotal include every cost?

No. Read the exclusions and replace every assumed amount with a quote. Check whether a package already includes park or permit lines.

Should I add another destination?

Only after the actual transfers still leave worthwhile time at each base. Removing a stop is often the simplest way to protect the pace.
