Route and travel time
| Leg | Distance or geographic reference | Time to allow |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi → Amboseli | KWS gate approaches: 204 km via Iremito or 220 km via Namanga/Meshanani; add lodge access | Editorial allowance 4-5 hours before longer family breaks |
| Amboseli → Diani | Choose and price an actually operating flight routing or a realistic road itinerary | Reserve the day; no unverified direct-flight time is promised |
| Diani → Nairobi | Booked coastal airport and flight determine the transfer | Use confirmed timetable and both road legs |
Road-time ranges are editorial planning allowances including ordinary breaks, not measured current traffic. Where an official distance is available it is identified; other distances need confirmation for the chosen gate and lodge. Safari driving is additional.

Book these decisions first
The numeric illustration is for two adults sharing and is not a family total. Add children’s actual room, meals, flight and entry charges. KWS’s published child/exemption wording overlaps at age five, so get that boundary confirmed rather than guessing.
Confirm sleeping arrangements, vehicle seats and appropriate restraints, activity age limits, food needs and walking distances at each property. Secure the actual safari-to-coast connection before reserving non-refundable rooms.

Day 1: A gentle Nairobi arrival
Arrange child-appropriate transport equipment where needed and a room layout that works after the flight. Keep food and sleep simple; no paid activity needs to be attached to arrival.
Day 2: One short city interest
Choose one activity suited to the children’s ages and attention span, with a known return route and rest time. Check age restrictions for specialist conservation visits instead of assuming every family can participate.
Day 3: Travel to Amboseli with breaks
Use a driver who understands the family’s needs and agree breaks in advance. Confirm the gate, arrival meal and room access. Keep any first drive short and optional rather than beginning with a full-day test of endurance.
Day 4: Safari at the family’s pace
Plan a manageable drive and return for rest if the base and entry rules support it. Ask about toilets, shade and water before departure. Give children room to notice birds and landscapes rather than focus on a fixed animal checklist.
Day 5: Another flexible safari day
Choose the duration with the guide based on the previous day. A private vehicle can provide flexibility if the quote supports it; a shared programme may have fixed times. Keep camp wildlife rules clear for everyone.
Day 6: A planned transfer to Diani
Use a confirmed domestic air routing or an operator-approved road plan; do not assume a direct daily flight exists. The entire transport day, airports, baggage and child requirements must be confirmed. It is deliberately left free of another booked activity.
Day 7: Beach and rest
Learn the actual frontage, tides and supervised swimming arrangements. A pool and shade can be useful alternatives. Choose one base that works without daily car journeys for meals.
Day 8: An optional family activity
Select only a provider whose age, equipment and supervision rules suit every participant. A quiet beach day is equally valid. Avoid splitting the family into complicated transfers merely to complete an advertised excursion.
Day 9: Return to Nairobi
Use the confirmed coastal airport and leave a final Nairobi overnight before the international flight. Check the domestic baggage allowance against the family’s actual equipment.
Day 10: Departure
Keep the day focused on the airport transfer, food and a comfortable check-in margin. Confirm any onward assistance directly with the airline.
A transparent budget you can adapt
The calculation below is an illustrative planning scenario for two adults sharing a room and a private road vehicle. Room, food and vehicle amounts are explicit assumptions chosen to make the arithmetic visible, not current supplier prices or a quote. Replace them with dated offers before booking.
Only the park and permit figures identified as published tariffs are sourced prices. Count paid access periods from the actual entry and exit times; the sample below does not establish how many tickets your operator will charge. Do not pay for a fee twice if it is already included in a package.
| Cost line | Basis | Per adult |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 9 nights × assumed USD 220 per room ÷ 2 adults | USD 990 |
| Meals not included in the room | 10 days × assumed USD 30 per person | USD 300 |
| Road vehicle / driver allowance | 4 charged days × assumed USD 220 per vehicle ÷ 2 adults | USD 440 |
| Amboseli adult example | 3 adult nonresident periods × USD 90; children require a separate age-specific calculation | USD 270 |
| Domestic flights and airport transfers | Family-specific quote required | Excluded |
| Child admission and room supplements | Use exact ages and current tariff rules | Excluded from adult illustration |
| Illustrative subtotal per adult | Only the numeric lines above; exclusions still need pricing | USD 2,000 |
International and domestic flights, entry authorisation, insurance, optional activities, tips, drinks, excess baggage and any unconfirmed fee are excluded unless explicitly included above. Do not convert separate KES or UGX costs with an invented exchange rate.
How to adapt the route
For fewer flights and a simpler budget, omit the coast and use a longer Nairobi/Naivasha stay. For children who enjoy the safari rhythm, keep more nights at one camp rather than adding another park.
If the coast connection is awkward for your dates, change the park or beach base. Do not make the family absorb an exhausting transfer merely to preserve a fixed list of names.

Questions & answers
Is this a bookable package?
No. It is an editorial route with explicit budget assumptions. Obtain dated transport, accommodation and activity confirmations from providers.
Are the road times guaranteed?
No. The exact gate, lodge, traffic, weather and stops determine the journey. Keep daylight and a buffer before fixed departures.
Does the subtotal include every cost?
No. Read the exclusions and replace every assumed amount with a quote. Check whether a package already includes park or permit lines.
Should I add another destination?
Only after the actual transfers still leave worthwhile time at each base. Removing a stop is often the simplest way to protect the pace.
