Confirm the airport and the next ticket
Read the airport names on every booking rather than relying on “Nairobi” in a search result. Safari flights may depart from Wilson while your international ticket uses Jomo Kenyatta. Ask the airline about the actual departure airport, check-in deadline, baggage allowance and transfer arrangements.
Do not treat separate tickets as a protected connection unless the seller explicitly confirms that responsibility. An airport change also requires road time, and a delayed inbound flight can affect the whole sequence.

Choose a base with a purpose

Make the pickup unambiguous
Ask for the meeting point, driver contact, vehicle identification and procedure after a flight delay. Save the information offline. If using a ride-hailing app, match the driver and registration and check the pickup instructions at the terminal.
Use a reputable transfer arranged through your accommodation or a verified service when that reduces uncertainty. Avoid accepting a ride solely because someone knows the name of a hotel or claims to be your driver. Confirm through the contact you already have.
Keep the first day light
A first day works well with one anchor: a museum, a planned meal or a short outdoor visit. Add ordinary tasks such as obtaining a local SIM and withdrawing a modest amount of cash without forcing a city-wide circuit.
Stay realistic about jet lag and traffic. If you want several attractions, group them geographically and let the driver or host check the current route. A timed reservation should not sit at the end of a sequence of optimistic cross-city journeys.
Know what a wildlife visit costs
Nairobi National Park is a paid KWS site, not an open city park. The October 2025 schedule lists USD 80 for a non-resident adult, with vehicle charges separate. A Sheldrick nursery visit needs its own advance reservation and donation in addition to applicable park entry.
Check the nursery’s actual confirmation and instructions before leaving the hotel. Do not assume that booking a driver, adopting an elephant or paying for a park ticket creates a nursery reservation.

Organise money and connectivity without rushing
Keep enough accessible funds for the transfer and immediate meals, then use a bank or reputable exchange service for the next stage. Ask before paying whether the recipient accepts a foreign card, cash or mobile money; these systems are not interchangeable.
Use an authorised mobile-network outlet and take your passport for registration. A working SIM does not automatically mean that every mobile-money function is ready for an overseas visitor. Test data and the essential contact numbers before moving to a remote area.
Move around with current local advice
Read current security advice and ask your accommodation about the specific neighbourhood, time and route you intend to use. Avoid turning a broad statement about Nairobi into a guarantee about every street. Use a trusted vehicle for unfamiliar journeys after dark.
Keep your phone and documents secure and carry only what you need for the outing. Store copies separately and know how to contact your accommodation. For driving days, a rested driver and a sensible schedule matter more than squeezing in another stop.

Leave the city with the next leg settled
Before the safari or coast transfer, reconfirm the pickup point, time, luggage limits and payment status. Tell the next accommodation when you expect to arrive and how delays will be communicated.
If taking SGR towards Mombasa, use the railway’s actual station and ticket rules. A Nairobi city hotel, JKIA, Wilson and the SGR terminus are different transport points; the route should name the one you need.

No. Confirm the airport on each ticket and allow for a road transfer if changing between them.
Do I need two days in Nairobi?
Not for every route. A settled arrival period is useful, but the right length depends on your flight times and interests.

The Trust requires advance confirmation for the public nursery visit; a park ticket alone is insufficient.
Is a Nairobi attraction close just because it is in the city?
