Choose the setting before the hotel

A beach-led stay, a coastal town and a historic island ask for different daily routines. Decide whether you want to walk to meals, spend time on a particular beach, explore heritage or arrange boat activities. Use the exact property location to test that choice.

A hotel described by the nearest famous destination may be some distance from the centre or the beach access you expected. Ask about the immediate area, transport after dark and the practical route to your planned activities.

Compare the bases

Make the arrival chain explicit

Write down each leg: departure airport or station, arrival point, road transfer and any boat connection. Confirm which provider is responsible for each transfer and how you contact them if the earlier leg is late. Do not assume that a ticket to Mombasa delivers you to a Diani or Watamu hotel.

For Lamu, establish the destination island, landing or jetty and final transfer with the accommodation. Current travel advice distinguishes Lamu and Manda islands from parts of the surrounding county, so check the actual route rather than a broad destination label.

Train or flight: compare the whole journey

Kenya Railways publishes Nairobi-Mombasa SGR schedules and fares, with station reporting and ticket conditions that need to be included in the day. A train fare should be compared with airport transfers and baggage as well as the airline ticket.

Flying can suit a short holiday or a connection closer to the selected base, but check the actual airports and luggage allowance. Separate tickets may require a larger buffer than a protected through-journey. Our comparison page sets out the trade-offs without treating one method as universally better.

Let sea conditions shape the activities

A coast stay is not a guarantee of identical swimming, boating or snorkelling conditions every day. Ask about tides, weather and the operator’s cancellation policy. Keep the best-weather activity flexible when possible rather than fixing every excursion long before arrival.

Use a reputable operator, suitable lifejackets and clear instructions. Check whether marine protected-area fees, equipment and transfers are included. Do not infer that a beach hotel has verified every independent excursion offered nearby.

Give heritage visits their own context

Fort Jesus and Lamu Old Town have distinct histories documented by UNESCO. A local guide can help interpret the buildings and living town around them, but current opening, guiding and access arrangements require separate confirmation.

Dress and behave with respect for the particular setting, ask before entering religious or residential spaces and request permission before photographing people. A living town is more than a convenient background between beach activities.

Check season by region, not a safari calendar

Kenya’s rainfall patterns vary by region. The meteorological department describes coastal rainfall patterns that do not map neatly onto a single inland safari-season label. Use that information as climate context and check the local forecast close to departure.

Ask the accommodation about maintenance closures, beach access and activities during your dates. We do not publish an assumed universal seasonal hotel price or promise that every boat trip operates throughout a particular month.

Keep one genuinely empty day

Our preference is a settled base with time for a slow meal, a walk and a changed plan. If every day contains another transfer or fixed excursion, the itinerary can lose the quality that made the coast attractive.

Protect the return connection as carefully as the arrival. A final night near the departure point can be useful when an international flight depends on separate domestic transport. Confirm timing and responsibility rather than relying on a best-case journey estimate.
