A first week in Kenya: choose a rhythm before you choose a route
A practical way to think about a first Kenya trip without trying to see the whole country at once.
A first trip works best when it has one clear centre of gravity. Start with Nairobi, then choose either a wildlife-focused extension or time on the coast. That leaves room for the unexpected and makes the logistics feel like part of the journey rather than a separate project.
Begin with Nairobi
Give the city enough time to recover from a long flight and to understand its scale. Stay in one neighbourhood, book only the first nights, and use those days to decide whether the next move should be inland or towards the ocean.
Pick one contrast
For many travellers, the useful choice is not between “more” and “less”, but between two distinct experiences: a few nights built around wildlife and wide landscapes, or slower time by the Indian Ocean. Trying to fit both into a short week usually creates too much transit.
Leave a buffer
Keep the final day close to your departure point. It is a small decision that protects the whole itinerary when a road journey, a domestic flight, or simply a good afternoon runs longer than expected.
