Decide what would make the week worthwhile
Start with the experience you would regret missing: wildlife time, a particular landscape, the coast or a city-and-culture stay. Then name the compromises you can accept. Someone who enjoys long road journeys may choose differently from a traveller who wants a settled base after an overnight flight.
Count usable days rather than calendar dates. An evening landing and an early departure do not create two sightseeing days. Write the actual arrival time, departure airport and any fixed commitments at the top of the route before filling the middle.

Book the constraint before the optional outing
Check entry requirements and passport eligibility through the official eTA portal. Once your travel dates are viable, identify the hard constraint: a specific safari camp, domestic connection or coastal transfer. Secure the pieces that determine the route before adding flexible lunches and excursions.
Ask the operator for accommodation locations, gate access, road or air transfers and what the first and last safari days actually contain. A package described as several safari days can include substantial travel at both ends.

Understand the park-fee difference
The Mara and KWS parks use different charging systems. Mara Triangle publishes a non-resident adult fee of USD 100 in January-June and USD 200 in July-December; KWS’s October 2025 schedule lists Amboseli and Lake Nakuru at USD 90 for a non-resident adult. These are admission lines, not full daily holiday budgets.
Ask whether your quote includes every chargeable entry period, vehicle fee and any conservancy visit. The cheapest accommodation headline may sit alongside additional fees or lengthy gate transfers.

Build an arrival day you can actually use
Choose the first hotel around the next move and the activities you genuinely want to do. Nairobi traffic makes a single map distance an unreliable measure of convenience. Confirm airport pickup, how to find the driver, and what happens if the flight is late.
Keep the first day modest. A meal, a short outing and time to organise cash or a SIM can be more useful than a dawn-to-dusk schedule immediately after arrival. Save offline copies of your documents and transfer details.
Decide what you want to pay for
Build the budget from accommodation, meals, transport, admission and optional activities. Separate confirmed prices from your own spending assumptions. A balloon flight, private vehicle or domestic flight can change the total more than small savings on meals.

Protect the last connection
Our planning preference is a buffer near the departure airport before a long-haul flight when the preceding journey is a long road transfer or separate domestic ticket. The appropriate margin depends on the actual schedules and booking terms.
If your budget or dates do not allow that buffer, simplify the route rather than hoping each connection will operate at its fastest possible pace. Keep the driver or airline’s contact details accessible and know which party is responsible if a leg changes.
Use the week as a beginning
A first trip does not need to settle every future travel interest. Give one place enough time to become more than a transfer stop. A quiet extra morning at the main base can be more valuable than another distant name in the itinerary.
After choosing the route shape, read the destination guide for each base and the practical pages for money, transport and health. They answer different questions; a beautiful route still needs ordinary arrival and payment decisions.

Book the time-sensitive parts that determine the route. Keep some flexibility for weather, energy and local conditions.
Are the itinerary budgets package prices?
