Wildlife and landscape
The Mara suits a trip built around time on grassland and river-country drives. The migration is one possible seasonal layer, while resident wildlife gives other dates a purpose. Choose the actual camp area and access rights before assuming every famous sighting location is within easy reach.
Amboseli offers a more focused elephant-and-wetland interest, with Kilimanjaro visible only when weather allows. If the mountain remains hidden, the park should still meet your reason for coming. Neither choice guarantees a predator encounter or a particular photograph.

Time and transport
For a road safari from Nairobi, Amboseli can be simpler to fit into a southern circuit, while the Mara needs a substantial transfer and a correctly chosen gate. These are route judgements, not promises that every lodge in one park is quicker to reach than every lodge in the other.
Both can be served by safari flights, subject to current schedules and the exact airstrip. Compare the airport transfer, flight baggage rules and camp pickup with the full road option. Splitting a very short stay between both destinations can leave too little time in either.

Cost and access
At the published adult nonresident rates, an Amboseli entry is USD 90, while the Mara Conservancy’s seasonal table is USD 100 or USD 200. That difference is only one cost line. Vehicles, accommodation, conservancy access and the entry-period rules can change the total.
Request the same inclusions from each operator: nights, meals, private or shared vehicle, actual entry periods and transfers. A lower room price outside a gate can be offset by access time and repeated charges. Do not price the Mara using a KWS ticket.

Which choice fits your trip?
Choose Amboseli when elephants, the wetland landscape and a southern road route fit your time. Choose the Mara when you can stay long enough to explore its grassland setting and select the right reserve or conservancy location.
If both are high priorities, give the transfer its own space and protect full days in each. Otherwise, a longer stay in the better-fitting destination is often the more comfortable editorial choice.
Compare the same amount of usable safari time
Put the arrival and departure pattern beside each option. A camp stay reached by a long transfer may provide fewer complete drives than the number of calendar days suggests. Ask for the expected time at the base, then decide whether the difference in landscape justifies the extra movement for your particular holiday.
Questions & answers
Which is cheaper?
Compare the full quote. Published entry is lower in Amboseli than the Mara seasonal adult nonresident rates, but accommodation and transport can reverse a whole-trip comparison.
Which guarantees better wildlife?
Neither. Choose the landscape and wildlife interests you value, with no promise of a particular sighting.
Can I combine both?
Yes, if you allow the transfer and enough nights to avoid spending most of the safari arriving and departing.
Can I combine Mara and Amboseli in one trip?
Yes, with enough time for both stays and the connection. On a short holiday, compare the transfer cost and usable viewing time with a longer stay in one park.
