The same migration does not mean the same location
UNESCO describes a migration system spanning Kenya and Tanzania. Herds move with conditions, and the location appropriate to one part of the year may be far from the accommodation useful in another. A booking labelled “migration safari” should name the region and explain why it fits the dates.
The calving plains associated with the southern ecosystem are in Tanzania, not a feature that a Kenyan Mara stay can promise. River crossings also cannot be scheduled. Ask what the safari offers if the herds are elsewhere so the trip has value beyond a single event.

Scale and a realistic route
For the Mara, distinguish the reserve, Triangle and adjoining conservancies. In the Serengeti, choose the part of the park and ecosystem deliberately; a generic park name can hide a long internal transfer. In both, the exact camp position is a major decision.
A cross-border safari requires legal border processing and an operator arrangement that actually works across jurisdictions. Do not assume you can drive directly from any Mara track into a Serengeti game-drive circuit. Confirm transfers, vehicles, documents and lost viewing time before combining both.

Compare the complete cost
The Mara’s published Triangle entry is a clear starting point, but conservancy or other reserve arrangements can add complexity. For Tanzania, ask for the current official entry, camping or concession, vehicle and any other protected-area charges relevant to the precise itinerary.
We have not verified a complete current Serengeti price calculation, so there is no invented like-for-like daily total here. Put both quotations into the same categories and check whether taxes, air transfers and every overnight fee are included.

Crowds and privacy
Privacy is affected by camp location, access rules, season and guiding decisions rather than the country name alone. A popular sighting can attract vehicles in either destination. Ask what your operator can do within the rules to give you patient observation time.
If fewer vehicles matter more than witnessing a famous crossing, say so before booking. The right answer may be a different area or activity rhythm, not necessarily a different country.

Which choice fits your trip?
Choose the Mara when a Kenya itinerary and the specific Mara location fit your priorities. Choose the Serengeti when the desired seasonal region and Tanzania route make better use of the time.
Combine them only when the ecosystem comparison itself is a priority and the border logistics are worth the additional travel. For a short safari, choose one well.
Questions & answers
Are they the same park?
No. They are connected ecologically but lie in different countries with different management and entry arrangements.
Can I drive straight across the safari border?
Do not assume so. Use the legal crossing and transport arrangement confirmed for your actual itinerary.
Which is best for migration?
It depends on the date and current herd location. Neither offers a guaranteed river crossing or fixed migration performance.
Can I drive directly between neighbouring safari camps across the border?
Do not assume so. The operator must specify a legal border crossing, vehicle permissions and actual route or flights.
