When to go

Sea conditions, heat and weather matter to boat transfers and beach days. If sailing is a priority, ask an experienced local provider about the season and current conditions for the precise route. A dhow photograph does not establish that every sailing itinerary is suitable on your dates.

Allow room to move a water-based outing within the stay. Walking through town and learning about its built heritage provide alternatives, but they also benefit from a comfortable time of day and rest breaks. Check major local events if you prefer either a busier cultural period or a quieter stay.

How to get there

Safarilink lists Lamu in its network. Confirm the actual airport and who meets the flight, then establish the boat leg to your accommodation. Ask about luggage handling, steps, jetty access and the final walk; these details matter if anyone has limited mobility.

Current regional advice must be read by exact geography. The distinction between the islands and mainland areas means a flight-based island holiday and an overland approach cannot simply share one safety description. Check your government’s advice and insurance coverage for the proposed route before paying for transport.

Where to make your base

Lamu Old Town suits travellers who want the town’s lanes, architecture and daily life close at hand. Shela or another island setting may suit a more beach-led stay. Choose the base for the rhythm you want and ask how evening meals and boat journeys work.

A waterfront view does not automatically mean immediate access to a suitable swimming beach. Ask the property about the route to the beach, tidal effects, walking distances and transport after dark. If stairs or uneven lanes are an issue, obtain a clear description of the room and arrival rather than relying on a broad accessibility label.

Time by the water and what to expect

UNESCO recognises the Old Town’s Swahili heritage, but it remains a living community. Dress and behave respectfully around religious and residential spaces, ask before photographing people, and use a guide who provides context rather than treating homes as exhibits.

Movement can involve walking and boats instead of the car-based rhythm of mainland resorts. That can be part of the appeal, but it requires thought about luggage, heat and getting back to your accommodation. Avoid scheduling an excursion return so tightly that a change in conditions threatens a flight.

A useful day on the ground

Set aside an unhurried guided walk for the Old Town, with time to ask about architecture, trade and contemporary life. Confirm any museum or specific site access directly; a public lane and a ticketed attraction do not have the same rules.

For a boat or sailing outing, agree the route, duration, lifejackets, shade, meal arrangements and weather decision in advance. Choose a provider who will change or cancel an unsuitable trip. Wildlife or sunset claims should remain possibilities rather than conditions the crew is pressured to deliver.

What the price should include

Ask for a written breakdown that separates accommodation, transport, entry and optional activities. A room price alone does not establish whether meals, guiding, vehicle use or transfers are included. Check which costs are per person, per vehicle or per booking before comparing two totals.

The public sources linked below do not establish a universal current price for every local activity. Where an amount is not confirmed, obtain a dated quotation from the authority or the service provider. Keep its cancellation terms with the booking, including the procedure if weather changes the activity.

How it fits into a route

Nairobi is a straightforward gateway to compare when arranging a safari-and-island trip. Protect the connection between the domestic flight and international departure, especially if the Nairobi airports differ.

Malindi and Watamu are other coastal choices, but an island stay does not naturally combine with them as a quick road hop. For a short coast extension, choose one setting. For a longer journey, use confirmed air and boat arrangements and allow proper arrival days.

Questions & answers

Is Lamu Island the same advisory area as all Lamu County?

No. FCDO’s current wording distinguishes Lamu and Manda Islands from restricted parts of the county. Recheck the live map for the actual access route.

Can I arrive directly at my hotel by car?

Do not assume so. Island arrivals can include a boat and a walk; ask the property for the complete sequence.

Old Town or Shela?

Choose Old Town for close access to its urban heritage and Shela or another island base for the particular beach-stay arrangement you want.

Is every waterfront hotel on a swimming beach?

No. Check the location, tides and route to a suitable beach.

How long is worthwhile?

Three or four nights is our suggested starting point for an island stay with time beyond transfers.
