Read the map, not a country-wide label
At our check, UK FCDO advice distinguishes several higher-risk areas from the rest of Kenya. Its Lamu County restriction excludes Lamu and Manda Islands; that distinction does not make the mainland journey interchangeable with a flight to the islands. Consult the live advisory map and your insurer for the exact route.
Travel advisories can change after a page is checked. Read your own government’s equivalent guidance as well, particularly before a border-region journey, an overland detour or a route affected by a new incident. A tour being available for sale does not establish insurance cover.

Nairobi neighbourhoods and evenings
A neighbourhood name is not a permanent guarantee of safety. Conditions differ between individual streets, times and events. Choose accommodation for its immediate access, transport arrangements and the places you plan to visit; ask staff which nearby walking routes are sensible that day.
Use an identifiable booked vehicle for an unfamiliar journey after dark, avoid isolated shortcuts and do not display valuables through an open car window or in a crowded street. If a demonstration develops, leave the area calmly rather than approaching it for photographs.

Road risk deserves its own plan
Road conditions, overtaking, livestock, pedestrians and driver fatigue matter outside the safari gate too. Ask the operator whether your itinerary needs driving after dark and whether breaks are included. If every day relies on the fastest theoretical transfer, remove a stop.
Use seatbelts where fitted and choose transport with a clear operator and a serviceable vehicle. Do not pressure a driver to recover a missed flight connection through speed. On safari, remain within the vehicle or authorised walking rules and follow the guide’s instructions around wildlife.

Documents, money and lost belongings
Keep secure digital copies of passport identification, entry approval and insurance contacts, with a second accessible copy if your phone is lost. Carry original documents where airlines, police or service rules require them, and use secure storage at other times.
If a passport or bank card disappears, contact the issuing embassy or bank through a verified number. Report theft to local police where required for replacement documents or insurance, and retain the reference. Keep emergency and insurer contacts offline before travelling.

What this guide cannot promise
We cannot certify that a city, lodge or neighbourhood is safe on a particular evening. Current local information and regional advisories are the right tools for that decision. The practical aim is to avoid preventable exposure, preserve alternatives and make help easy to contact.

Agree the late-arrival plan
If a road journey falls behind schedule, ask the driver and accommodation to agree a revised plan while there is still time to act. Know who can arrange a suitable stopping point and how an extra night would be handled. A prepaid room at the far end of the route is not a reason to insist on an unsafe continuation.
Questions & answers
Is all of Kenya under the same advisory?
No. Official advice distinguishes regions and routes. Read the current map for your exact itinerary.
Can I treat Lamu Island and mainland Lamu County alike?
No. FCDO’s regional wording distinguishes Lamu and Manda Islands from restricted parts of the county; check the access route separately.
Should I drive at night?
Plan transfers in daylight where possible and avoid making a late journey necessary through an overfull itinerary.
Which Nairobi area is always safe?
No neighbourhood has a reliable permanent guarantee. Check the particular street, time and local conditions.
What should I keep offline?
Accommodation and driver contacts, insurance assistance, passport-copy details, entry approval and payment receipts.
