Choosing a Kenya safari: compare the actual days and inclusions

Describe the day you want

Decide whether your priority is broad grassland, elephant observation, dry northern country, rhino conservation or a safari connected to the coast. Then discuss how you want to spend a day: early starts, full-day drives, a midday rest or a mix of activities.

Tell the operator about children, mobility needs, photography equipment and tolerance for long drives. These practical details affect vehicle space, accommodation access and the pace far more than a generic luxury or budget label.

Use a landscape-based shortlist

Count nights and complete viewing days

Ask for the departure and arrival pattern at every base. Two nights may give one complete day between transfers; a short drive on arrival is not equivalent to an unhurried full day. Put the approximate transfer duration beside each change of accommodation.

Our preference is fewer settled bases for a short trip. Repeatedly packing, reaching gates and checking in can use the time you hoped to spend observing wildlife. Add a second park when it brings a worthwhile change that the available days can support.

Read the vehicle and guiding details

Confirm whether the vehicle is private or shared, how many people travel together and how seating is allocated. Ask whether the same guide stays with you and how the daily plan is agreed. A photograph of a vehicle model does not establish the actual space or condition.

If anyone needs step-free access, additional support or a particular seat arrangement, request specific answers. Ask how a mechanical problem is handled and what communication is available away from towns. Clear logistics are more valuable than a promise of perfect sightings.

Separate the fee authorities

Mara reserve and conservancy charges should not be labelled KWS fees. KWS publishes its own park tariff, while Mara Triangle publishes its seasonal adult non-resident rates and access rules. Private conservancies can add another fee system.

Ask for the chargeable dates and visitor categories. Check whether a final morning, crossing into another managed area or an optional activity creates another payment. A written total should explain what happens if the route changes.

Compare accommodation by location and function

A tented camp can offer extensive facilities, while a lodge may have simpler rooms; the accommodation label alone does not establish comfort or price. Ask about bathroom access, power, water, meal times, walking between rooms and communal areas, and any wildlife-related escort rules.

Find the camp on the correct side of the relevant gate or river. A low room rate can mean repeated commuting or a poor match for the activities you want. Match the base to the route before comparing decorative details.

Know which activities are actually permitted

Walking, night drives and off-road access depend on the specific place and programme. Do not assume that a national park ticket includes the same freedoms as a conservancy stay. Ask the operator to name where each advertised activity occurs and who authorises it.

Ballooning and conservation visits are separate commitments with their own access, weather and booking rules. Add them because they interest you, then protect ordinary game-drive time around them.

Make the final comparison fair

Place competing quotes side by side with the same dates, accommodation nights, vehicle arrangement, park visits, meals and transfers. List exclusions such as drinks, tips, optional activities or additional entry. Keep unconfirmed items visibly open until the provider answers.

Read cancellation terms and the procedure for weather, illness or changed travel plans. A well-described safari gives you a clear understanding of what you are buying while leaving wildlife and weather honestly uncertain.
