A name does not describe the room

Ask for the facilities of the exact room category: bathroom arrangement, hot water, insect screening, ventilation, charging and safe storage. “Tented” does not necessarily mean sleeping on the ground, and “lodge” does not establish air conditioning or a television.

If noise, temperature or mobility matters, request a practical description. Canvas can transmit outside sounds, while a solid building can still be close to a generator or communal area. Check the path from the vehicle to the room and dining space, including steps and any escort requirement.

Location matters more than the wall material

A well-placed camp can reduce transfers to your chosen drive area; a distant lodge can add hours, and the reverse can also be true. Identify whether the property is inside a national park, in a conservancy or outside the boundary.

That location affects entry fees, permitted activities and the daily routine. Ask whether a reserve day is extra to a conservancy stay and whether returning for lunch creates another gate journey. The building type cannot answer any of these questions.

Guiding and the daily programme

Confirm private or shared vehicle use, maximum group arrangements, drive timing and the guide’s role. A beautiful room with an inflexible programme may be a poor fit for a specialist birding or photography interest.

Ask what happens in bad weather, whether activities depend on minimum participation and which walks or night drives are actually authorised. Do not infer those permissions from the word camp or from a photograph of someone walking near wildlife.

Compare the invoice

Put room, meals, drinks, park or conservancy fees, transfers, drives, laundry and optional experiences on separate lines. A higher headline rate may cover more of the day; a lower rate can be better value only when you know what remains to pay.

Read the deposit, cancellation and date-change terms for the exact offer. We have not verified a universal price advantage for either accommodation type. The useful comparison is between two complete, dated stays with matched inclusions.

Responsible operation

Look for specific evidence of conservation and community practice rather than a general eco label. Ecotourism Kenya provides a starting point for understanding standards, while the property should explain water, waste and local employment practices in concrete terms.

Wildlife close to a room creates responsibilities, not a right to approach it. Follow escorted movement and food-storage instructions regardless of whether the walls are canvas or brick.

Which choice fits your trip?

Choose the property that fits your location, comfort and daily programme. Prefer a tented setting if you enjoy its atmosphere and accept its practical conditions; prefer solid walls if that better matches your needs.

Treat either choice as a room-and-safari contract to inspect, rather than a shortcut to luxury, authenticity or value.

Questions & answers

Are tented camps always basic?

No. Facilities range widely; inspect the actual room and bathroom arrangements.

Are lodges always safer or better connected?

No universal claim is justified. Ask about the property’s specific wildlife, power and communication arrangements.

Which costs less?

There is no confirmed universal ranking. Compare matched dates and all inclusions.

Does a camp allow night drives?

Only if the land-management rules and booked programme permit them. Accommodation structure does not grant activity rights.
