Compare door to door

Write down the time you leave the Nairobi accommodation, the required station or airport arrival, the service time and the final road transfer. A shorter flight can still be awkward if it uses the wrong airport for your coast base or has an inconvenient schedule.

For Diani, compare a Ukunda flight with arriving at Mombasa and transferring south. For Watamu or Malindi, a flight serving Malindi may be worth comparing as a different destination pair. The SGR reaches Mombasa terminus, not any of those beach properties.

What the published rail price buys

Kenya Railways’ fare poster lists economy, first and premium adult one-way prices. Those amounts establish the train line only. Add the station transfers, any meals and the cost of arriving at a time that requires a private pickup.

A shared economy rail journey and a premium seat are different spending choices, but neither automatically includes a beach transfer. Compare the full train option with a flight that has equivalent luggage needs and a usable arrival time.

Booking and changes

Use metickets.krc.co.ke or another channel explicitly listed by Kenya Railways. Match the ticket name and passport or ID to the original document you carry. Do not assume a foreign card works in every online payment flow; the published terms list M-PESA and station payment arrangements.

The published rail conditions specify cancellation at least 48 hours ahead with a 30% fee and rescheduling at least 48 hours ahead with a 10% fee, subject to availability and one change. Economy and first-class procedures differ from premium online changes. Check the current process before calling a ticket flexible.

Comfort and the travel day

The train can make the journey itself part of the trip if you accept the time and arrange a straightforward arrival. Choose the service around the needs of children, meals and the hour you will reach the hotel. An overnight arrival requires an appropriate pickup and check-in plan.

A flight can preserve more of a short holiday, especially when the final airport is convenient. It can also impose tighter luggage rules or a less flexible fare. The useful question is which complete day you prefer, not whether rail or air is inherently the better way to travel.

Which choice fits your trip?

Choose economy SGR when its published fare and a well-organised transfer make a good-value travel day. Consider the higher rail classes for their actual service and space rather than assuming they compete only on speed.

Choose a flight when its total timing and final airport materially improve your itinerary. Keep a buffer if either option connects onward to an international departure on a separate booking.
