When to go
Mountain conditions can change quickly and differ from the weather in Nanyuki or Nairobi. Choose dates with a qualified mountain operator using the current forecast, route conditions and the experience of the group. A nominally dry season does not remove cold, rain, cloud or altitude risk.
For a foothill stay, plan alternative lower-level walks or rest time if visibility is poor. For a high route, allow flexibility for weather and acclimatisation. Do not book a summit attempt as the fixed final morning before an international flight; a safe mountain decision may require a changed schedule.

How to get there
KWS identifies Sirimon, Naro Moru and Chogoria as the official gate approaches. They are different starting points, not interchangeable names for the same arrival. Confirm the actual trailhead and whether the transfer price includes rougher access beyond a town pickup.
A flight to Nanyuki can shorten the Nairobi road segment, but it does not deliver you to a high camp or supply acclimatisation. Ask the trekking operator how the arrival day, equipment check and overnight elevation fit the plan. If crossing from one side of the mountain to another, include the exit pickup and retrieval of stored luggage.

Where to make your base
Nanyuki and Naro Moru work for different foothill and trailhead plans; Chogoria serves the eastern approach. Choose around the operator’s itinerary rather than a general “Mount Kenya view”. The place you sleep before and after a trek should support the logistics of the actual route.
On a multi-day trek, distinguish huts, campsites and any lodge nights in the quotation. Check bedding, toilets, food, water treatment and what the team carries. If sharing accommodation, find out whether arrangements are fixed or depend on availability. A mountain package should describe the overnight stages clearly.

Conditions on the trail and what to expect
Point Lenana is a trekking objective, while Batian and Nelion involve technical climbing. Do not treat “summit Mount Kenya” as a sufficient description of a product. Ask which peak, route, maximum elevation and technical skills are involved before comparing prices.
Fitness and altitude tolerance are different. Tell the guide about relevant medical concerns and discuss a slower schedule, acclimatisation and turnaround decisions. Forest and moorland walks can be worthwhile without a summit; choosing a lower objective is a legitimate way to enjoy the mountain.

A useful day on the ground
For a non-summit visit, select a permitted guided walk suited to the weather, available daylight and everyone’s fitness. Carry layers, rain protection, water and food even when the morning looks settled. Establish the return point and how the guide communicates if the plan changes.
For a trek, use the pre-departure briefing to inspect equipment and understand each day’s ascent, descent and accommodation. Agree who can call a turnaround and how evacuation is organised. A clear plan for stopping is as important as a photograph of the intended summit.

What the price should include
Ask for a written breakdown that separates accommodation, transport, entry and optional activities. A room price alone does not establish whether meals, guiding, vehicle use or transfers are included. Check which costs are per person, per vehicle or per booking before comparing two totals.
The public sources linked below do not establish a universal current price for every local activity. Where an amount is not confirmed, obtain a dated quotation from the authority or the service provider. Keep its cancellation terms with the booking, including the procedure if weather changes the activity.
How it fits into a route
Ol Pejeta can add a distinct conservation-focused safari in the wider Nanyuki region. Samburu adds a drier northern landscape on a longer itinerary; the Aberdares offer another highland setting with their own routes.
Give a major trek recovery time before a long safari transfer. If the mountain is only a scenic stop between parks, say so in the itinerary and choose a foothill activity accordingly. Avoid presenting a brief regional stay as an ascent of the mountain.

Can an ordinary hiker climb every peak?
No. Point Lenana is a trekking objective, while Batian and Nelion require technical climbing skills and appropriate support.
Which gate should I use?
KWS lists Sirimon, Naro Moru and Chogoria. Use the gate specified by your route and operator.
What does park entry cost?
The KWS tariff lists nonresident USD 70 adult and USD 35 child; a full trek also has guiding, camping, transport and equipment costs.
Can I visit without a summit attempt?
Yes. A foothill stay or suitable guided walk can be the main purpose of the visit.
Does flying to Nanyuki replace acclimatisation?
No. It changes transport time, not the physiological demands of gaining altitude.
