Registering M-PESA as a visitor

Safaricom’s individual registration form lists a passport among identification documents and has a separate M-PESA registration section. Take the original passport to an authorised outlet and explicitly ask for both SIM registration and wallet activation. Do not rely on an already-registered SIM sold by a stranger.

Before leaving the shop, check that the account is in your name, set your own PIN and test a small transaction. Ask the agent to show the current deposit, withdrawal and transfer charges on the official tariff. We have not independently confirmed a universal tourist-wallet limit or a fixed fee for every transaction; the current account terms control.

How much cash should you take into a park?

Work from your actual unpaid expenses rather than a generic daily allowance. List tips you choose to give, drinks outside a meal plan, porter or guide services, small purchases and a reserve for a delayed return. Subtract costs already prepaid. Confirm whether your camp accepts cards when its connection is down.

A cash reserve is not permission to pay a cashless park gate in banknotes. Have the gate payment organised before losing signal and save the receipt offline. Avoid carrying the entire holiday budget in one wallet. Keep a backup card separately and record how to freeze each card.

Exchange, ATMs and card currency

Use a bank or identifiable foreign-exchange bureau, compare the displayed rate and any commission, and keep the receipt. An exchange rate changes daily, so we do not publish a fixed shilling-to-dollar conversion. Check the live total before accepting a transaction.

At an ATM or card terminal, inspect any proposed conversion into your home currency and compare it with your own card terms. A bank fee, an ATM operator fee and a currency-conversion margin can be separate costs. Withdraw somewhere you can put the money away before stepping into the street. Never hand a PIN to an assistant.

Tips without a fabricated national rule

There is no single official tourist tipping tariff that we can substantiate. Ask the operator how tips are distributed, whether a shared staff box exists and whether the driver-guide is separate. Choose an amount you can afford; a suggested tip should not appear later as a compulsory undisclosed charge.

For any disputed bill, retain the itemised invoice and payment confirmation. A screenshot of a transaction being initiated is not the same as a confirmed payment. Check the merchant name before authorising M-PESA and verify the final confirmation on your own phone.

Questions & answers

Can tourists use M-PESA?

Safaricom’s registration form accepts passport identification. Ask an authorised outlet to confirm your eligibility and activate the wallet in your own name.

Can I pay Mara Triangle entry in cash?

Mara Conservancy states that cash is not accepted at its entry points; organise its listed card or M-PESA payment method.

Should I bring US dollars?

Only where a supplier has confirmed dollar payment. Kenyan shillings are the practical currency for ordinary local spending.

How much should I tip?

We could not confirm an official national tariff. Ask how tips are shared and decide voluntarily from your budget.

Is a mobile wallet enough on its own?

No. Keep a separate payment method and offline receipts because coverage, power and account access can fail.
