Safaricom or Airtel?

Both publish mobile services for Kenya. Ask your accommodation and driver which network works at the precise camp, village or beach property you will use. Their recent experience is more useful than declaring a nationwide winner from an old coverage anecdote.

We have not confirmed comparable, current tourist-bundle prices from both providers, so there is no invented cost-per-gigabyte table here. To compare an offer, divide the full payable price by the usable general-purpose data and note its expiry. An inexpensive overnight-only bundle is not equivalent to daytime navigation data.

Passport registration and a useful shop check

Safaricom’s registration form identifies a passport as an accepted document type. Use an authorised shop, check the registered name and retain the receipt. Do not let a seller register the number under someone else’s identity.

While staff can help, make a call or send a message, open a map, check the balance and learn how to buy more data. Confirm the support contact and how to replace a lost SIM. If you are setting up M-PESA, treat that as a separate activation check, including a PIN you choose privately.

Local eSIM versus a roaming travel eSIM

An eSIM is a method of installing a mobile profile, not a guarantee of a Kenyan phone number or a local wallet. Check that your exact handset supports the product, is carrier-unlocked and can keep your home number active if you need bank verification messages.

Before purchase, ask whether the plan is data-only, which Kenyan network it uses, whether hotspot sharing is allowed, when validity starts and whether installation requires an internet connection. Current local eSIM availability and activation prices were not independently confirmed for every provider; verify the product directly before paying.

Prepare for a disconnected safari day

Download maps, permit receipts, hotel coordinates and the driver’s number while on reliable Wi-Fi. Save a readable copy outside an app that may require a fresh login. Tell anyone expecting a daily check-in that silence can mean no signal.

Ask the lodge whether its Wi-Fi reaches rooms or only a communal area and whether charging depends on generator hours. Keep enough phone power for documents and contact calls. Avoid scheduling a critical work meeting during a game drive or a transfer into a remote conservancy.

Protect accounts when you change numbers

Keep access to your home SIM if banks send it login codes, and prepare recovery methods before departure. Use a screen lock and separate the mobile-wallet PIN from the phone unlock code. If the phone disappears, contact the provider and your financial services promptly rather than relying on a remote wipe alone.

Keep access to your usual number

Before switching SIMs, check how you will receive banking verification messages and access accounts linked to your usual phone number. Keep that SIM secure and review roaming settings to avoid unintended data charges. Download tickets, maps and accommodation contacts before leaving reliable connectivity.

Questions & answers

Do I need my passport?

Take the original passport to the authorised outlet; Safaricom’s form lists passport identification.

Does a data eSIM include M-PESA?

Do not assume so. A data-only roaming eSIM may have no Kenyan number or eligible local wallet.

Which network works in the Mara?

Ask your camp about its exact location. Park-wide coverage claims do not establish service at a particular tent or river crossing.

How much is a gigabyte?

A comparable current price was not confirmed across providers. Check total payable price, usable allowance and expiry on the official offer.

Can I work remotely from a camp?

Only after the camp confirms the connection and power arrangements that your work requires; keep a fallback.
