Route and travel time
| Leg | Distance or geographic reference | Time to allow |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi → Mara camp | Exact distance depends on reserve side, gate and lodge; obtain the routed distance | Editorial allowance 6-8 hours, potentially longer for remote approaches |
| Mara → Nairobi | Return from the actual camp, not just the reserve boundary | Editorial allowance 6-8 hours plus any separate morning drive |
| Nairobi hotel → airport | Address- and airport-specific | Confirm current traffic and check-in allowance |
Road-time ranges are editorial planning allowances including ordinary breaks, not measured current traffic. Where an official distance is available it is identified; other distances need confirmation for the chosen gate and lodge. Safari driving is additional.

Book these decisions first
Secure the Mara accommodation and clarify whether it is in the reserve, Triangle or a conservancy. Ask for the exact entry periods, gate and fee inclusions. The sample budget uses the higher published July-December rate; the same three-period entry example is USD 300 in January-June.
Check eTA eligibility, international arrival timing and whether the chosen safari is by road or air. A fly-in version needs new flight and transfer prices; it does not use the road allowance unchanged.

Day 1: Arrive in Nairobi
Arrange a transfer to the accommodation and keep the rest of the day light. Confirm the next stage’s pickup, documents and baggage. If the flight lands late, do not attach a paid city activity that depends on clearing the airport quickly.
Day 2: A focused Nairobi day
Choose one principal interest near your base: a cultural visit or a properly booked Nairobi National Park drive. The park is optional and not included in the sample entry subtotal below. Check any Sheldrick reservation separately. Finish with time to prepare for the road journey.
Day 3: Travel to the Mara
Allow the road transfer its own day and use the accommodation’s exact gate directions. Settle into the camp and take an afternoon drive only if arrival and entry timing leave useful time. Confirm the paid access period rather than assuming an overnight room covers every reserve hour.
Day 4: A full safari day
Agree a coherent area with the guide, including a return for lunch or a properly planned picnic. Leave room for waiting and observation. If migration is a priority, discuss recent herd reports while accepting that no crossing is guaranteed.
Day 5: A different safari rhythm
Use another full day to explore a different habitat or revisit an area patiently. A balloon flight is optional, separately priced and weather-dependent. Keep reserve versus conservancy access explicit if the camp offers a change of area.
Day 6: Return to Nairobi
Check whether any morning drive creates another entry period before adding it. Make the return journey with breaks and aim for a relaxed evening near the next day’s departure needs. This night protects the international flight from a delayed safari transfer.
Day 7: Depart with margin
Use any free time locally rather than adding a distant attraction. Confirm the airport, traffic allowance and airline check-in requirement. Keep receipts and entry documents accessible until the journey is complete.
A transparent budget you can adapt
The calculation below is an illustrative planning scenario for two adults sharing a room and a private road vehicle. Room, food and vehicle amounts are explicit assumptions chosen to make the arithmetic visible, not current supplier prices or a quote. Replace them with dated offers before booking.
Only the park and permit figures identified as published tariffs are sourced prices. Count paid access periods from the actual entry and exit times; the sample below does not establish how many tickets your operator will charge. Do not pay for a fee twice if it is already included in a package.
| Cost line | Basis | Per adult |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 6 nights × assumed USD 160 per room ÷ 2 adults | USD 480 |
| Meals not included in the room | 7 days × assumed USD 25 per person | USD 175 |
| Road vehicle / driver allowance | 4 charged days × assumed USD 200 per vehicle ÷ 2 adults | USD 400 |
| Mara reserve entry example | 3 paid adult nonresident periods × USD 100 January-June / USD 200 July-December | USD 600 |
| Illustrative subtotal per adult | Only the numeric lines above; exclusions still need pricing | USD 1,655 |
International and domestic flights, entry authorisation, insurance, optional activities, tips, drinks, excess baggage and any unconfirmed fee are excluded unless explicitly included above. Do not convert separate KES or UGX costs with an invented exchange rate.

How to adapt the route
For a lower entry subtotal, compare January-June with your preferred dates, using current conditions and availability rather than choosing only on price. If staying in a conservancy, substitute its actual charges and any reserve days.
For less road time, compare a confirmed Wilson-Mara flight and its baggage terms. For a much broader holiday, add days before adding the coast or another distant park.

Questions & answers
Is this a bookable package?
No. It is an editorial route with explicit budget assumptions. Obtain dated transport, accommodation and activity confirmations from providers.
Are the road times guaranteed?
No. The exact gate, lodge, traffic, weather and stops determine the journey. Keep daylight and a buffer before fixed departures.
Does the subtotal include every cost?
No. Read the exclusions and replace every assumed amount with a quote. Check whether a package already includes park or permit lines.
Should I add another destination?
Only after the actual transfers still leave worthwhile time at each base. Removing a stop is often the simplest way to protect the pace.
