Nairobi → AmboseliKWS lists about 204 km via the Iremito approach or 220 km via Namanga/Meshanani; final lodge differsEditorial allowance 4-5 hours plus specific final approach
Amboseli → Tsavo WestKWS identifies the connecting route; obtain gate-to-lodge kilometres from the operatorEditorial allowance 4-6 hours
Tsavo West → DianiDepends on lodge, exit gate and south-coast routeEditorial allowance 5-7 hours

Road-time ranges are editorial planning allowances including ordinary breaks, not measured current traffic. Where an official distance is available it is identified; other distances need confirmation for the chosen gate and lodge. Safari driving is additional.

Book these decisions first

Confirm the connecting road, accommodation gates and charged entry periods with the safari operator. An extra departure-day entry can change the sample park subtotal.

Book the return flight and baggage allowance before packing. The budget below covers an illustrative five-day safari vehicle allowance, not continuous private transport throughout the beach stay. Airport and local coast transfers remain additional.

Day 1: Nairobi arrival

Keep the first evening quiet and confirm the driver, gate and accommodation for Amboseli. Check the coast-to-Nairobi flight and its baggage terms before the road trip begins.

Day 2: Travel to Amboseli

Use the chosen gate approach and arrive with time to settle. An afternoon drive depends on the real arrival and entry window. Do not make Kilimanjaro visibility the condition for a successful first day.

Day 3: A full Amboseli day

Spend time around the wetland and elephant interests with a guide-led route and proper breaks. Keep a second opportunity for mountain views if the weather changes.

Day 4: Transfer to Tsavo West

Follow the operator’s confirmed connecting road and gate plan. This is a travel-and-arrival day, not a full activity day in both parks. Ask which entry periods are charged at each end.

Day 5: Tsavo West landscapes and wildlife

Build a manageable day around a landscape feature and wildlife observation. Any spring or walking visit must follow the current authorised route and guide instructions.

Day 6: Travel to Diani

Allow the complete lodge-to-beach journey, including park exit and the south-coast approach. Keep the arrival afternoon unbooked. Learn the property’s actual beach and tide conditions before arranging outings.

Day 7: A quiet coast day

Rest after the road circuit. Choose swimming only under current local guidance and keep any boat outing optional. The beach stay is not a requirement to complete another checklist.

Day 8: One optional marine or local activity

Use a suitable weather window with a known operator, clear equipment and fee inclusions. Keep the rest of the day flexible in case the trip is postponed or you prefer another quiet day.

Day 9: Fly back to Nairobi

Use the actual booked airport, such as Ukunda or Mombasa, with its corresponding road transfer. Confirm the Nairobi arrival airport and next-day international departure. The airfare and these transfers need separate prices.

Day 10: Depart from Nairobi

Keep the final transfer local and allow traffic and check-in margin. A late flight may leave time for a nearby meal or short activity, but preserve the buffer.

A transparent budget you can adapt

The calculation below is an illustrative planning scenario for two adults sharing a room and a private road vehicle. Room, food and vehicle amounts are explicit assumptions chosen to make the arithmetic visible, not current supplier prices or a quote. Replace them with dated offers before booking.

Only the park and permit figures identified as published tariffs are sourced prices. Count paid access periods from the actual entry and exit times; the sample below does not establish how many tickets your operator will charge. Do not pay for a fee twice if it is already included in a package.

How to adapt the route

For less road travel, keep only Amboseli or Tsavo West and add a night there and on the coast. For a rail-based return, substitute a confirmed Mombasa-Nairobi service and include station transfers and the appropriate timetable.

If choosing Watamu instead of Diani, change the coast transfer and flight gateway; do not reuse the south-coast timing unchanged.

Questions & answers

Is this a bookable package?

No. It is an editorial route with explicit budget assumptions. Obtain dated transport, accommodation and activity confirmations from providers.

Are the road times guaranteed?

No. The exact gate, lodge, traffic, weather and stops determine the journey. Keep daylight and a buffer before fixed departures.

Does the subtotal include every cost?

No. Read the exclusions and replace every assumed amount with a quote. Check whether a package already includes park or permit lines.

Should I add another destination?

Only after the actual transfers still leave worthwhile time at each base. Removing a stop is often the simplest way to protect the pace.
