Route and travel time
| Leg | Distance or geographic reference | Time to allow |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi → Ol Pejeta / Nanyuki | KWS places the nearby Mount Kenya gate approaches about 188-210 km from Nairobi; obtain the separate exact conservancy route | Editorial allowance 4-5 hours to the selected regional base |
| Nanyuki region → Samburu | Exact reserve and camp route required | Editorial allowance 3-5 hours |
| Samburu → Nakuru area | A substantial cross-region road leg; obtain exact routed kilometres | Editorial allowance 7-9 hours |
| Nakuru area → Mara | Depends on chosen gate and camp | Editorial allowance 5-7 hours |
| Mara → Nairobi | Camp-to-hotel route required | Editorial allowance 6-8 hours |
Road-time ranges are editorial planning allowances including ordinary breaks, not measured current traffic. Where an official distance is available it is identified; other distances need confirmation for the chosen gate and lodge. Safari driving is additional.

Book these decisions first
Obtain written Ol Pejeta and Samburu fees before treating the example subtotal as a trip budget. The unpriced rows are material costs, not free activities. Match the northern property locations to the road plan.
Reserve the Mara base and confirm the entry periods. At the January-June USD 100 rate, the three-period Mara example would be USD 300. The Mount Kenya day here is a foothill-scale visit, not a climbing package.

Day 1: Arrive in Nairobi
Meet the transfer, rest and confirm the route documents. Avoid an ambitious arrival programme after an uncertain international flight.
Day 2: Nairobi and preparation
Choose one city interest and use the remaining time for any SIM, money or luggage arrangements. Review the northern transfer and activity reservations with the operator.
Day 3: Travel to the Ol Pejeta area
Take the road north with breaks and arrive at a base that serves the conservancy. Do not book a tightly timed specialist encounter immediately after the long transfer.
Day 4: Ol Pejeta conservation and drives
Use the day for a confirmed specialist programme and a sensible drive schedule. Ask which conservancy entry and activity fees are included. Sanctuary and wild-forest encounters are different experiences.
Day 5: Mount Kenya foothill interest
Choose a locally suitable guided walk or foothill activity, returning to the same regional base where practical. This is not a summit trek. If entering the national park, use the relevant KWS fee and confirm the guide and transport.
Day 6: North to Samburu
Confirm the reserve and camp approach and make the journey in daylight. Arrive with time to understand the camp’s movement and wildlife rules. A short outing depends on actual arrival time.
Day 7: Samburu full day
Explore the river corridor and another appropriate habitat with the guide. Plan rest during the hotter part of the day if conditions warrant it.
Day 8: A second northern safari day
Give dry-country wildlife and birds attention beyond a checklist. A hosted community visit is optional and should have clear consent, payment and photography arrangements.
Day 9: Transfer to the Rift Valley
This is a long road day, with the chosen Nakuru-area overnight serving as a break. Do not promise a full Nakuru game drive on top. Confirm the route and accommodation approach before leaving.
Day 10: Continue to the Mara
Use the actual gate and camp plan, with a realistic arrival. If visiting Nakuru park is a priority, add a night to the holiday rather than squeezing it into the same long transfer.
Day 11: Full Mara day
Let conditions guide the route and leave time for patient observation. Keep reserve and conservancy access rights clear throughout.
Day 12: Another Mara day
Choose a different habitat or revisit a productive area without changing accommodation. A weather-dependent balloon trip remains optional and separately priced.
Day 13: Return to Nairobi
Allow the road transfer and a comfortable final evening. Confirm whether a short departure-day drive creates an additional paid access period.
Day 14: International departure
Keep the airport transfer simple and leave traffic margin. A final local activity is optional only if it preserves the check-in buffer.
A transparent budget you can adapt
The calculation below is an illustrative planning scenario for two adults sharing a room and a private road vehicle. Room, food and vehicle amounts are explicit assumptions chosen to make the arithmetic visible, not current supplier prices or a quote. Replace them with dated offers before booking.
Only the park and permit figures identified as published tariffs are sourced prices. Count paid access periods from the actual entry and exit times; the sample below does not establish how many tickets your operator will charge. Do not pay for a fee twice if it is already included in a package.
| Cost line | Basis | Per adult |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 13 nights × assumed USD 180 per room ÷ 2 adults | USD 1,170 |
| Meals not included in the room | 14 days × assumed USD 30 per person | USD 420 |
| Road vehicle / driver allowance | 11 charged days × assumed USD 220 per vehicle ÷ 2 adults | USD 1,210 |
| Mount Kenya park entry example | 1 nonresident adult entry if the chosen day walk enters the KWS park | USD 70 |
| Mara entry example | 3 paid periods × published July-December USD 200 | USD 600 |
| Ol Pejeta and Samburu | Current official complete fees not confirmed in this budget | Add dated authority/operator quote |
| Illustrative subtotal per adult | Only the numeric lines above; exclusions still need pricing | USD 3,470 |
International and domestic flights, entry authorisation, insurance, optional activities, tips, drinks, excess baggage and any unconfirmed fee are excluded unless explicitly included above. Do not convert separate KES or UGX costs with an invented exchange rate.

How to adapt the route
For a slower trip, omit Samburu and give more nights to the Mount Kenya region and Rift Valley. For a shorter road connection, compare confirmed flights and rebuild the transport budget accordingly.
For a coast priority, use the separate safari-and-beach route instead of adding the ocean to this already substantial inland circuit.

Questions & answers
Is this a bookable package?
No. It is an editorial route with explicit budget assumptions. Obtain dated transport, accommodation and activity confirmations from providers.
Are the road times guaranteed?
No. The exact gate, lodge, traffic, weather and stops determine the journey. Keep daylight and a buffer before fixed departures.
Does the subtotal include every cost?
No. Read the exclusions and replace every assumed amount with a quote. Check whether a package already includes park or permit lines.
Should I add another destination?
Only after the actual transfers still leave worthwhile time at each base. Removing a stop is often the simplest way to protect the pace.
