Sheldrick: book the actual nursery visit

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust describes a public nursery visiting window of 11 am-noon, with arrival by 10:30 am. Advance booking is required, same-day requests are not accepted, and booking opens up to three months ahead. The stated annual closure is 25 December. Check your date with the Trust.

The Trust says a reservation is confirmed only by its own confirmation email. If an operator arranges the visit, ask for that confirmation rather than relying solely on a line in the safari itinerary.

Ol Pejeta: choose the programme before the route

Ol Pejeta describes rhino conservation and chimpanzee-related visitor programmes on its own website. Check exactly which activity is operating, which reservation is required and whether it is included in conservancy admission. We have not verified a current complete activity tariff, so a numeric package price here would be misleading.

It belongs in a Laikipia or northern Kenya itinerary, not as a casual Nairobi afternoon excursion. Ask for the gate, meeting point, check-in time and rules for photography or access before choosing accommodation.

How to judge a conservation claim

Ask who runs the programme, what work the payment funds and which limits protect the animals. A clear explanation of veterinary care, habitat protection or community conservation is more useful than an unqualified promise that your ticket saves wildlife.

Use independent conservation certification as one piece of evidence, then read what it actually covers. An accommodation certification does not automatically validate every third-party excursion sold at its reception desk. Ecotourism Kenya provides a starting point for inspecting local responsible-tourism programmes.

Keep the animal’s needs ahead of the visitor schedule

Avoid experiences sold primarily as touching, posing with or controlling a wild animal. Follow staff directions about distance, noise and photography. If care routines or conditions change the visit, accept that the programme’s work takes priority over a particular photograph.

Do not expect an adoption or donation to buy private access. Verify any special invitation directly with the organisation and distinguish a donation receipt from a confirmed visitor booking.

Make the visit part of a workable day

For the Nairobi nursery, allow time for the correct park access and entry payment; arriving at an unrelated gate or attraction wastes a fixed visiting slot. Ask the Trust and driver to agree the current route. A separate game drive should have its own duration and inclusions.

For Ol Pejeta, a stay nearby can make an early meeting practical. Avoid fitting a conservation programme between two long transfers simply because a map shows it in the same broad region.

Keep the recipient clear

Pay through the organisation’s stated channel and keep the receipt. If an intermediary collects a combined amount, ask it to separate transport, admission and donation. That makes the contribution understandable and helps you verify that a promised reservation has actually been secured.

Questions & answers

Is Sheldrick entry included in a Nairobi park ticket?

No. The nursery donation and the KWS park ticket are separate charges.

Can I turn up without a reservation?

The Trust requires advance booking and does not accept same-day requests for the public nursery visit.

Is every Ol Pejeta activity included in entry?

Do not assume so. Obtain the current admission and activity quote directly for your selected programme.

Does a donation guarantee private animal access?

No. Follow the organisation’s actual visitor rules and obtain a separate confirmation for any special programme.
